    Competitors from across the GCC arrived in Bahrain this morning ahead of the 18 th Bahrain edition of the BSME Young Musicians of the Gulf. This year, 136 students from seven schools from across the region will take part including The British School Al Khubairat, British School Kuwait, Doha British School, Dubai College, Jumeirah College, Sharjah English School and St Christopher’s School, with Dhahran British Grammar School also attending as guests.

    The students were welcomed to St Christopher’s School, Isa Town Campus, by Nick Wilson, Head of Senior School and Faye Hill, Head of Music, followed by an address, regarding ‘performance expectations’, by adjudicator Ashley Wass.

    The first round of Instrumental performances then took place before all the students returned to the Sofitel hotel in Zallaq, which is also where the Grand Final will be taking place this Thursday.

    BACKGROUND

    The Young Musicians of the Gulf event was originally conceived in 1998 as a “celebration of young musical talent” within the Gulf, and since then has become a most prestigious and high-profile competition. Participants from schools across the Gulf are invited to Bahrain for four days of musical competition. The standard of performing is very high, with participants aged between 10 and 18 years.

    In the lead up to the Grand Final, all the musicians have an opportunity to attend Master Classes led by distinguished adjudicators who bring their own special talents to the competition. This year, we are thrilled to welcome three esteemed adjudicators from the UK, and the young performers will benefit from master classes led by Zoe Martlew, Tansy Davies and Ashley Wass.

    Zoe Martlew is a cellist, performer, composer, media commentator and educator who performs and records around the world as soloist and with some of the world’s most renowned contemporary music ensembles, improvisation, film, electronica, multi-media, pop and rock artists, dance and theatre companies. She is much in demand for educational activities, giving master classes, seminars and workshops at universities, music conservatoires and festivals around the world.

    She is Artistic Director of the Saigon Chamber Music Festival, coaching and performing in Vietnam, regular cello tutor /workshop leader for the National Youth Orchestra and is a regular jury member for international composition and string playing competitions, including the Royal Philharmonic Society awards.

    Tansy Davies’ has performed internationally and has been commissioned by ensembles and orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group with Thomas Adès, Grup Instrumental de Valencia, London Sinfonietta, BIT 20, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Musiques Nouvelles, Orquesta Sinfonica de Chile, BBC Symphony Orchestra for the Proms in 2010, and a carol for Kings College Choir for the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in 2011.

    In 2009 she received a Paul Hamlyn Award, in 2011 her Requiem As with Voices and with Tears was nominated for a South Bank Show/Sky Arts Award, and Tansy was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of the University of Essex. In 2012, Tansy was a Semi-Final adjudicator at the BBC Young Musicians competition. Ashley Wass has been described as an ‘endlessly fascinating artist’, he is firmly established as one of the leading performers of his generation. He began playing the piano at the age of five, and studied music at Chetham’s School of Music from age 11.

    In his teens he studied on scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, where his teachers included Christopher Elton and Hamish Milne. He is the only British winner of the London International Piano Competition, prize winner at the Leeds International Piano Competition, and a former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist. Increasingly in demand on the international stage, Ashley has performed at many of the world’s finest concert halls. He has performed as soloist with numerous leading ensembles, including all of the BBC orchestras, the Philharmonia, Orchestre National de Lille, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, RLPO.
