We turn on the bathroom lights and the shower without realising how closely-related water and energy are to each other.

If we take the time to observe some of our daily habits, we would realise how, even in the smallest ways, we actually contribute massively to the increase in our utilities bill, considering the fact that both of water and electricity usually go hand in hand.

  • Television and other screens’ brightness should be reduced. All televisions and computers should be shut down when not in use, especially at night. Screens’ brightness greatly contributes to power consumption.
  • Unplug all electrical appliances and devices when not in use, as electronics still use a little bit of energy even when turned off, but left plugged in the electrical outlet.
  • Repair a dripping tap. A dripping tap can waste 15 litres of water a day, or 5,500 litres of water a year.
  • Install a water meter. When paying your utility provider for exactly how much water is consumed, as laid out in an itemised bill, there’s an incentive to waste less of the stuff.
  • Thawing frozen food by keeping it in the refrigerator rather than keeping it under running water helps prevent water wastage.
  • Normal temperature water should be used when doing the laundry instead of heated water. It is equally effective in cleaning clothes but requires less energy. Moreover, it could actually work better in preventing your clothes from shrinking in the wash!
  • Instead of using a water hose to clean the front yard and driveway, use a broom.
  • While mopping the floor, a sponge mop uses less water than a string mop.
  • Install solar-powered appliances such as water heaters whenever possible to reduce consumption of electricity.

It’s time to think about the future and how you can make it better by reconsidering your actions.
