The Kingdom of Bahrain has received an international acclaim for its human rights track record. More than 24 international organisations, including 8 ones that carry the advisory capacity as observers at the United Nations, expressed in a joint statement issued today their appreciation for the efforts and initiatives undertaken by the Kingdom of Bahrain in order to uphold the human rights values and principles according to a national strategy based on partnership and complementarity.

The international organisations stressed the unique experience pursued by the Kingdom of Bahrain since the launch of the reform project is of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, which is based on developing the system of legislation, policies and institutions concerned with human rights. They affirmed that this strategy has earned the kingdom an advanced status in the human rights field at the Arab and international level. They noted that Bahrain offers a unique international experience based on continuous and gradual work to develop the national human rights system and spread its culture in various vital sectors in the kingdom.

Chairman of the Arab Federation for Human Rights (AFHR), Chancellor Isa Al-Arabi, the President of “Ma’an” Society for Human Rights, said the statement issued today by a large group of international human rights organisations comes on the heels of the end of the 46th session of the Human Rights Council and the accompanying politicization of human rights issues to serve cheap agendas and goals of some countries and groups that are exercising the most heinous types of human rights violations.

Al-Arabi affirmed that the statement is of paramount importance as it expresses the vision and evaluation of the international community of the human rights condition in Bahrain. He added it clearly reflects the opinion of impartial international organisations and their evaluation of the kingdom’s achievements and initiatives to boost human rights and honor its international obligations. He described the statement as a new accomplishment added to Bahrain’s track record of achievements in the human rights field. He noted that the issuance of the statement at this particular time by well-reputed international organisations, including organisations accredited as “observers” at the United Nations, undoubtedly expresses the confidence of the international community in the measures and initiatives undertaken by the Bahraini government, headed by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to foster human rights.

The International organisations underscored in their statement Bahrain’s leading status in the human rights field since the launch of the reform project and the inauguration of the National Action Charter which the kingdom is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The charter represents a basic reference in promoting the human rights march in Bahrain as well as achieving democracy and popular participation.

The international organisations commended Bahrain’s pioneering steps in fostering human rights and achieving human development. They noted the kingdom’s advanced international status by gaining the confidence of the international community in electing it as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the third time. They also stressed Bahrain’s continuous interaction with the rest of the world in bolstering human rights. They highlighted the kingdom’s unique human rights achievements, praising the radical reforms brought about in this respect and their compatibility with global standards. They also lauded the tremendous efforts of the Ministry of Interior and its affiliated sectors, including mainly the Correction and Rehabilitation Centres, to overcome the challenges resulting from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, curtail the spread of the virus, protect the community and preserve security and stability. They also praised the ministry’s efforts to improve the conditions of the Correction and Rehabilitation Centres and safeguard the rights of inmates.

The international organisations highly commended Bahrain’s initiatives to combat COVID-19 pandemic, boost response to it and ensure all citizens and residents are protected without discrimination. They affirmed the significance of Bahrain’s leading position in the international rates concerning approval, provision and administration of secure vaccines for citizens and residents free of charge. They also pointed out the kingdom’s allocation of the largest financial package, at the international level, to spare them the repercussions of the pandemic.

In this context, the AFHR Chairman asserted that the campaign targeting Bahrain’s human rights achievements is tendentious seeking to serve the political agendas of countries and groups that do not believe in the noble human rights values and principles. He stressed failure of those attempts to tarnish the kingdom’s international reputation, emphasizing strong belief of the international community in Bahrain’s unflinching commitment to human rights principles and its endeavor to foster them through strategies and programmes, under the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
