While driving, children should not be taken lightly by drivers. A drivers encounters children in three situations and in each situation he needs to be extra careful.

Children in front of the vehicle

Children, especially those below 7 may materialize in front of your vehicle suddenly, either alone or as they race ahead of their adult minder to cross the road. On busy roads, near schools and in residential areas drive slowly and be on the lookout for any truant one.

Children playing cricket or soccer in open lots close to roads is not an uncommon sight and they make a rush to pick up the ball with no care or concern for the traffic. That is where your role as a careful driver comes into the picture.

As for children below 7, especially the daring 3- or 4-year-olds, whether alone or accompanied, the best course would be to freeze and come to a dead stop until they have sorted themselves out.

This scenario has to be tackled when you are reversing your vehicle, whether in a public parking lot or as you emerge from your garage or porch. Remember that a two- or three-year-old would be too tiny to be spotted in the rear-view mirror; he would be shorter than the trunk of the car.

Many tragic accidents have occurred due to innocent drivers rashly reversing their vehicles without taking due precaution. Spare a moment to check it out if your home or the home you are visiting has small children. And definitely do so in a public car park.

The worst driver is the one who carries his baby in the lap and takes to the steering wheel. The situation could turn out to be the deathtrap for the baby in case you meet with even a minor head-on accident.

The next worst thing is to allow a child [or even two children, as is occasionally noticed] to sit in the front seat. Apart from the danger of their fiddling with the gear stick out of curiosity, they may also get hurt in case of an accident. The seat belt will also be loose for them.

It is best to always send them to the back seats. Toddlers and small children must be carried in baby seats of a proper size according to their age. The child-lock must be in place in case the children are 3 years and above. And the windows must not be pulled down more than halfway through. And even then they must not be permitted to lean out or to hang their hand outside. A vehicle passing too close to your car could leave a disaster on your hands.
