Dr. Delos “Toby” Cosgrove tours State-of-the-Art Medical Facility and Notes Significant Progress Made over Past Year

Dr. Delos “Toby” Cosgrove, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, visited Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi today to review progress and meet with Caregivers at the award-winning hospital.

During his visit, he toured some of the expanded facilities at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and received an update on the enhancements made over the past year.

In 2016, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi was designated as the only Stroke Center in the UAE capital, introduced the region’s first comprehensive remote monitoring program for patients with cardiac implants, and successfully performed the region’s first laparoscopic endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP), among a number of significant regional clinical firsts. In total, the hospital saw more than 285,000 patients and completed 9,200 surgical procedures during the year.

“Every time I visit Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, I am impressed by the strength of the partnership between Cleveland Clinic and Mubadala Healthcare, and the results being achieved here. There has been real success in ensuring that our ‘Patients First’ philosophy guides every aspect of the patient experience within the hospital,” said Dr. Cosgrove.

In addition, he praised the leadership of the UAE for its far-sighted healthcare strategy: “Every country in the world is trying to balance the needs of the population against rising healthcare costs, and the UAE – and Abu Dhabi in particular – has taken great strides in ensuring that there are sustainable processes in place to deliver compassionate, patient-centered care of the highest quality.”

Dr. Cosgrove spoke at length to Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi staff during his visit, including some who had previously worked at Cleveland Clinic in the US before taking their positions in Abu Dhabi. The close relationship between the two institutions has facilitated significant transfer of knowledge and best practices, improving the level of care and patient outcomes at both locations.

The visit came one week after the May 1 announcement that, after nearly 13 years as president and CEO of Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Cosgrove has begun the succession process to transition out of the top executive role later in 2017.

Over the course of his tenure, Cleveland Clinic’s expansion locally, nationally, and internationally has positioned the institution with multiple locations in Ohio, Florida, Nevada, Canada, Abu Dhabi, and, in 2020, London. As president and CEO, Dr. Cosgrove has driven major initiatives that have gained international recognition, created best practices in healthcare, focused on patient outcomes and promoted patient experience.

Dr. Cosgrove’s leadership has emphasized patient care and patient experience, including the re-organization of clinical services into a patient-centered model of care designed around organs and diseases rather than doctors. He coined the phrase “Patients First” to be the guiding principle for all caregivers.
