Drones are generally known today as flying robots or unmanned aircrafts which are remotely controlled by a person through a software on a tablet, computer, mobile device, etc. or through an autonomous software (self-programmed control).

Drones are considerably valuable assets to many industries, including package transportation and delivery, photography and videography as well as search and rescue. This is mainly because they are relatively inexpensive and affordable by many of the common public, and that they are fast and can cover ample ground in seconds. Furthermore, they are significantly beneficial in the agriculture field as drones can be used to monitor the crops through aerial surveillance of the cropland which enables farmers to pin-point areas that require care and analyse patterns, all to improve yield, optimise the use of resources and avoid unnecessary waste.

The potential of drones did not stop there. Drones are increasingly being used by photographers and filmmakers to capture high-quality pictures or cuts from a completely unreachable (or difficult to reach) positions. This is mainly because drones can fly over oceans, seas, mountains, landscapes and more to take aerial images of the dazing beauties of our world. All of which is for a relatively low price if compared to the amount paid to cinematically create, produce and edit such images/cuts. They are also growing among journalists and reporters who are now capable of capturing moments such as wars, accidents or natural disasters without risking their lives.

While companies are testing drones for monitoring, inspections or delivery, Facebook had different innovative thoughts. In their effort to connect the world to the Internet, Facebook has recently purchased a solar-drone company for the purpose of providing Internet access to remote regions of the world via drones. Facebook intends to have drones flying over such remote regions (i.e. areas which are not yet connected to the Internet) which will be connected to their satellite to bring access, voice and opportunity to billions of people around the world.

This is no longer part of a science fiction novel or a movie. It is real and it is happening right now. There is no doubt that drones will continue to create a massive blast in many industries, reshaping their business strategies and plans. Nonetheless, the application of drones in the commercial and public worlds will eventually have to be regulated by the local and international laws to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the public and aerospace, as well as the world’s economy.
