Eagle Pose [Garudasana]

Eagle Pose
Eagle Pose

‘Garuda’  is said to be the king of birds. It is also considered a magical species because of their extraordinary ability to fly and never get tired.

Organising the Pose:

1. Stand upright with the feet together and the arms at the sides. Focus your eye gaze ahead at a point.

2. Bend the right leg, and twist it around the left leg. The right thigh should be in front of the left thigh and the top of the right foot should rest on the calf of the left leg.

3. Bend the elbows and bring them in front of the chest. Twist the forearms around each other with the left elbow remaining below.

4. Place the palms together to resemble an eagle’s beak. Balance in this pose for sometime, then slowly bend the left knee and lower the body, keeping the back straight , until the elbows come down to the knees and the tip of the right big toe touches the floor.

5. Keep the eye gaze fixed to a point. Hold the final position for as long as is comfortable, then raise the body, and release the legs and arms. Repeat on the other side.

6. Come back to Tadasana and relax with closed eyes.

DO’S:

Fix your eye gaze to maintain your balance.

DONT’S:

  • Don’t tense up the muscles around the neck and shoulders.
  • Don’t practice in the later stages of pregnancy.

BENEFITS:

  • Improves concentration.
  • Strengthens the muscles and loosens the joints of the shoulders, arms and legs and is good for the upper back.

Namaste!
