Explore the delights of China with Cathay Pacific

From the Great Wall of China and the city skyscrapers, to the majestic mountains and tranquil coasts, China is the land of diversity ready for Bahrain travelers to explore.

Bahrain families looking to take advantage of an early summer escape should consider the diversity on offer across China. Emerging as a key tourism destination for travelers from across the region, there has never been a more opportune time to explore its hidden gems and key attractions, and Cathay Pacific connects travelers to 22 mainland destinations through its home, Hong Kong.

“China provides travelers with a wealth of destination options to suit all tastes and preferences. Whether looking for a relaxed family break, or one of cultural discovery, each destination provides something different to appeal to every member of the family,” Cathay Pacific Area Manager Middle East Jonathan Ng said.

Ahead of the peak summer period, Cathay Pacific has collated eight Chinese destinations travelers should consider when looking for travel inspiration.

Hong Kong

From shopping to street food, Hong Kong’s urban pleasures are plentiful – not least for the world-famous breadth of cuisine, ranging from dim sum, hotpot, buttery pineapple buns and stinky tofu, to the Michelin-starred offerings of glitzy international restaurants. Away from the bustle and glamour of the main island, however, Hong Kongers enjoy casual access to the likes of surfing, camping, hiking, cliff jumping and dragon boat racing, all less than an hour from the city centre.

Shanghai

China’s glamorous eastern city shimmers with all the excitement and promise of a supercharged metropolis, but beneath its bluster lies plenty of old-world charm. Get lost in the Old City’s maze of lanes, shop your way around the French Concession and, when dusk falls, head to a restaurant on The Bund for panoramic views of the skyline by night. For a break from the city’s energy, head to Qibao, one of the eight ancient water towns surrounding Shanghai and explore its many waterways.

 Beijing

Beijing is a stunning mega-city with all the hallmarks of old China. Take a trip back in time by walking down rickshaw-lined Hutong alleyways or gaze at the majesty of the ancient Forbidden City. No trip to Beijing is complete without seeing the awe-inspiring Great Wall and the city is within easy striking distance of several sections such as at Badaling, Juyongguan and Jinshanling. Beijing’s Summer Palace is another must see, the 700-acre royal retreat once the leisure destination of the Imperial Family.

Hangzhou

An important place for artists and poets through the ages, Hangzhou – located in Zhejiang, and known as one of China’s most iconic tourist destinations – is known for its scenery, vast history, and rich culture. Also, one of China’s top destinations for foodies, Hangzhou offers many local delicacies, including the tangy fish dish of xihu cuyu, fish broth, and fish head with bean curd. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hangzou’s West Lake is the perfect place to catch a sunset.

Chengdu

It’s not often that you can call a Chinese megacity ‘leafy’, but Chengdu is exactly that: spacious, plenty of green spaces and voted 2nd most livable city in China. Take a bicycle down hibiscus lined streets to visit the serene Wenshu temple and try tasty guango hot pot, a local favourite. Chengdu’s most famous residents are the panda’s and there is no better place to view them than at the Giant Panda Research Centre.

Guilin

Made famous by some of China’s most proficient painters and luminaries, beautiful Guilin is a very popular choice for those wanting to see classic Chinese vistas. Take your first steps back in time with a visit to Longji rice terraces, preserved in all their original glory for centuries. To experience the full natural beauty of the area take a cruise down the River Li from Guilin to the little town of Yangshuo.

Xi’an

Xi’an owes its fame to the Terracotta Army of the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty, Qin Shi Huang. The incredible collection of sculptures represents one of the world’s great wonders, but it’s not the only reason to visit this ancient yet upbeat city. Once finished with exploring the city’s rich history, indulge in some rest and relaxation at the Huaqing Hot Spring near Xi’an, a popular recreational spot for more than 6,000 years.

Haikou

Located on the popular Hainan Island, Haikou is the capital of China’s Hainan Province. A tropical city on the coast, it is a major gateway to the island’s beautiful beaches and laid-back seaside culture. The aptly-named Holiday Beach is one of the area’s liveliest shores, whilst Xixiu Beach is a popular spot for windsurfing. For more adventure, explore the caves, volcanoes, craters, and lava landscapes of Haikou Shishan Crater Cluster National Geological Park.
