But over the counter drugs for children can be seriously harmful. So stop if your child is down with a flu and you are stepping out to the chemist’s for some immediate respite. Book an appointment with your doctor, and mean while try these very safe home remedies to help your child feel better.
Lots of restÂ
When down with an infection, it takes energy to fight an infection, and that can wear a child (or an adult) out. When your child’s resting, he’s healing.
Give your child a snug and comfortable place to rest in. Let him watch his favorite video or television program one more time. Or bring him his favourite story book, a new set of crayons and paper or coloring book. Even a puzzle can be manageable in bed.
Steamy air (all ages)
When congested, breathing moist air helps loosen the mucus in the nasal passages. A warm bath has the added benefit of relaxing your child. You will require a humidifier, cool-mist vaporizer, or steamy bathroom.
Be sure to clean humidifiers often and according to the manufacturer’s directions. Humidifiers accumulate mold, which they then spray into the air if they’re not kept scrupulously clean. AÂ warm bath in a steamy bathroom or hot shower run for a few minutes can be very soothing for your child.
Saline drops, bulb syringes and vapor rubs)Â
Drops clear the nose when kids are too young to blow their nose. For babies, a bulb syringe really comes in handy if a stuffy nose interferes with breastfeeding or bottle-feeding. Try using it about 15 minutes beforehand.
Vapor rubs may help kids sleep better at night. And last bout not the least, lots of love, doting care and delicious soups will complete the list of magic cares that will shoo your little one’s cold away!
