What is light painting? Light Painting is when an artist uses hand held light source to radiate parts of a scene in a painting. This is done selectively to give focus on a particular scene of the painting. This is a technique which is also used in photography and is achieved through long exposure photography.
Light painting is a special photography technique which can be used on still life or landscape photos. There is no photo editing required on this since the image is created in real time and is captured in the camera in one single photographic frame.
To further enhance your result, one can try using a torch or a flashgun to illuminate a scene during long exposure at night. If you do this, you will have to set your camera on Bulb mode and use a lockable remote release to keep the shutter open while you try to illuminate your subject. However, when you use artificial light source, keep your source moving to prevent hotspots.
It is also imperative to once in a while check your exposures using the histogram on the rear screen to ensure that the light-painted features in your image are bright but are not burned out. While using light painting, you should remember that the number of minutes you set your camera for long exposure will have an impact on how your result would look in the end.
