DIFF365@VOX powered by du continues its run of compelling, challenging and entertaining global independent cinema and comes home this month with a film from the UAE, Abdulla Al Kaabi’s award winning debut feature “Only Men Go to the Grave”.
The film enjoyed its world premiere at DIFF’s 13th edition screening to a sold out audience and receiving rave reviews from audience and critics alike. Emirati filmmaker Abdulla Al Kaabi wrote and directed the compelling feature and went onto pickup Best Director in the Muhr Emirati Feature category in the prestigious Muhr Competition.
This beautifully shot film is set straight after the Iraq-Iran war in 1988, and delves into the life of a blind mother who welcomes her estranged daughters to tell them a secret. Unfortunately, she accidentally dies while sharing it. During the funeral, the daughters try to deal with their mother’s sudden death and also work together to unveil her secret by looking for clues from visitors. Throughout the funeral, their own lives continue to unravel, giving room for buried family tensions to gradually surface, while struggling to deal with their own secrets and deep-rooted guilt. The daughters start to question everything about their mother’s life after a peculiar encounter…
“Only Men Go to the Grave” will screen exclusively to DIFF 365@VOX at the dedicated theatre (cinema 9) at VOX Cinemas, Mall of the Emirates in Dubai from 10th August until August 23rd 2017.
