The Australian Embassy in Doha will host an exhibition of Australian opals, opening on 23 May and closing on 15 June.  The exhibition will feature rare and precious opals on loan from the South Australian Museum.  The items have been selected from the South Australian Museum’s Opals exhibition which ran from late 2015 until early 2016.

The exhibition includes the Virgin Rainbow, the world’s finest opal valued at over AUD1 million, as well as other rare and precious items from the Museum’s collection.  This is the first time the Virgin rainbow and many of the other items have been exhibited outside Adelaide or Australia.

Like other opals, the Virgin Rainbow is composed of silica and water and was formed over millions of years from the opalized fossils of dinosaurs.

Never before seen outside Australia, Opals is an exhbition of rare and precious objects from the South Australian Museum’s collection.
