Remain alert and focus on the road

alert

While driving down a highway it is essential not only to avoid using the mobile but one should also fully focus on the road and one’s surroundings.

The Road Ahead

Be alert all the time. On a two-way road without a divider one has to be extra careful. Keep an eye on the vehicle approaching you and try to gauge whether he is driving rashly and whether he is keeping to his side of the road.

Look closely at the body language of the pedestrian who may appear keen to cross the road and depending on the situation either warn him with the show of headlights no to venture on to the road or slow down and invite him with the show of headlights to cross over.

Also keep an eye on the lanes at right out of which some drivers may be trying

to emerge to join the highway. Some just do not bother to stop and check the traffic situation and plunge onto the road virtually unannounced. Others do stop
but their front is protruding into the road by a couple of feet which mean you will have to either put the brakes and let them go ahead of you or you will have to slow down, warn them through headlights and swish past them.

If you are in the fast lane, watch out for the maverick pedestrian, the jaywalker, the truant youngster and the stray dog or cat who have this tendency to suddenly emerge from behind the trees or bushes causing disastrous consequences.

The Road Behind

Remember to watch out for the traffic behind you too by now and then looking into the rear-view mirror or the side-view mirrors. If you are in the middle lane there could be a driver wanting to overtake you. Do oblige them.

Remember to never slow down to look at an accident [unless you mean to help, in which case you obviously must park your vehicle safely and conveniently] otherwise the vehicle behind you might plough into you, or you might hit the rear of the vehicle ahead who might have slowed down for the same reason as you.

Safe driving!
