Supported Revolved Head to Knee Pose [Salamba Parivrtta Janushirshasana]

Parivrtta means revolved, janushirsha means head to knee and asana is pose. When this pose is done using a chair, placed against a wall, it ensures more stability and can be practiced by beginners or advanced practitioners to find more depth.

Props Required:- Chair, 1-2  blankets

Organising the Pose:-

1. Start by sitting in Dandasana or staff pose, facing the chair, with your legs underneath the chair and your feet braced against its back rung.

2. Stretch out your arms so your hands press against the top of the backrest of the chair and your spine stretches forward and up.

3. Now release the hands from the back of the chair and draw the right leg back, bending it at the knee so the sole press against your left inner thigh.

4. Use a folded blanket below the right knee if it is not touching the floor.

5. Extending both sides of the ribcage evenly lift the right arm to the side and bring it up with a broad circular movement placing it on the backrest over the left hand.

6. Feel the stretch in the outer hip and and waist holding the position for a minute or more

7. Repeat on the other side.

         

Use of Props:-

      You can place a folded blanket on the seat of the chair to give a cushion support  for the head, if you rest it down on the seat.

Benefits:-

1. Stimulates circulation to the spine.

2. Stretches the sides of the torso, outer hips and waist.

3. Tones the abdominal organs.

4. Gives hip flexibility and stretches the hamstrings.
