Things to do at an Accident

Accident
Road Accident

Despite people’s best efforts and dedication to the rules of driving on the road, accidents do happen. In such a scenario one must consider the following:

Do not move your vehicle.

While in case of a minor accident [grazing a vehicle, hitting a vehicle at slow speed causing a minor dent or breaking a light etc.] the traffic police now expects people not to call them up, advising both the involved parties to approach the nearest police station, in case of a major accident you must take care not to move your vehicle nor allow the other party to move theirs. They have to remain stationery as they were at the moment of the accident.

Do not run away from the scene.

Even more importantly, whether it is a minor accident or a major one, never run away from the scene of an accident. Remember, whatever you may do, police and the law will ultimately catch up with you.

Far from running away, in case you have injured a pedestrian or a child due to your negligence, you should call up police and a hospital for ambulance and if possible offer the injured first aid. The same rule applies if the driver or any occupant of the other vehicle involved in the accident has been seriously injured. Remember that in case of a seriously injured person you decision to stay back and call for medical help or your decision to run away may make a difference of life and death for him.

Accident
Damaged Vehicle

Do not try to repair or alter the damaged vehicle.

While running away from the scene of an accident after causing it is in itself a crime, the worse is to try and cover up your crime by repairing your vehicle’s visible damage either yourself or at a ‘friendly’ workshop. You must not replace, repair, paint over, fix or alter the parts of your vehicle damaged as a result of an accident until police have seen and examined your vehicle. Otherwise you will also be guilty of doctoring the evidence.

Abide by the law and avoid legal complications.
