Ayurveda or the ‘science of life’ is based on the principle that everything is made of the 5 elements of nature. The 5 elements are built on 3 energies ie Vata, Pitta and Kapha. So, we have all 5 in our biological constitution but in unique proportions such that those elements go into the 3 energies.

Most people are predominant more of one of the energies. The other two doshas in lesser amounts eg Kapha- Pitta, Vata -Pitta, Vata- Kapha etc where one of the two energies is more dominant than the other and the third energy is in much lesser proportion.

The individual constitution of a person is derived from the relationship of the three doshas. The innate constitution predetermines how we are doing physically, mentally and emotionally. It holds a huge importance in Ayurveda medicine.

Tridosha

Very seldom people will have all the three doshas in equal amounts. That is known as ‘Tridosha’. When this is the case, a natural balance is present that is the foundation of health, fitness and wellbeing par excellence.

The ‘prakriti’ or biological constitution if balanced when the three energies are balanced as in Tridosha. Such people remain at peace with themselves as nothing flusters them. They are neither lethargic nor keyed up, their mind is alert yet relaxed. They are in a calm, happy always.

Incase it happens that a Vata -Pitta- Kapha type negates his/ her nature, Vata, Pitta or Kapha can get out of line. In such a case the typical characteristic feature of the respective Dosha can occur, including disorders.

The Tridosha Ayurveda type are usually of medium built ie neither too slender nor too big and radiate peace and strength.

If the Vata- Pitta- Kapaha types eat the wrong food or travel too much and do not stay true to their original self over longer time periods, Vata issues like sleep disorders, digestive disorders and anxiety may occur. Pitta disorders like hot flushses, gastritis and mushy bowel movements may occur. If Kapaha acts against the Vata and Pitta then lethargy and depression may be seen.

Warm, well seasoned food and drink are the best for a Tridosha person. This is so the balance of their energies remains constant.

Namaste!
