Award launched for the empowerment of women globally

The HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibarahim Al Khalifa prize for women empowerment at the international level was announced at the 36th session of Arab Women Committee in Bahrain.

Hosted by HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of HM the King, President of the Supreme Council for Women, the session reflected Bahrain’s interest in uplifting the status of Arab women and Royal keenness to develop laws and regulations in Arab countries to promote women’s rights and status, said Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abu Gheit.

He noted that Bahrain is launching the award in collaboration with the UN and that it will be held periodically in New York staring next month.

Meanwhile, the Arab League had bestowed the Arab Woman Medal on Princess Sabeeka in tribute for her unrelenting and influential efforts to promote the institutional momentum to empower Arab women and ensure sustainable development of Bahraini women as well as maximize their development contributions.

She received the medal at a meeting at Al Rawdha Palace with in the presence of participants in the 36th session of the Arab League’s Arab Women Committee and the preparatory meeting for the 61st session of the UN’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) which kicked off at the Sofitel Hotel under the presidency of Bahrain and her patronage.

He also said that he invited Princess Sabeeka to visit the Arab League Headquarters in Cairo to address a meeting comprising delegates of Arab League member states on uplifting status of Arab women.

He underlined that honoring Princess Sabeeka with Arab Woman’s medal in current session is in recognition of her efforts in support of women’s issues at the local and Arab level.
