This is a commonly asked question from first timers to Yoga. In today’s age, health and fitness have gained prominence and a lot more people understand the advantages of eating right, working out and generally keeping their weight in check to ward off ailments and other health related issues.

Having said that, instant gratification is what people aspire for in this fast paced world of ours. Looking for instant results we are drawn towards programs which guarantee the same eg. ‘Loose 5 kgs in 3 weeks with no exercise’ is far more appealing than loosing the same weight and keeping it off but over a span of 3-6 months.

So, I would say that if you are looking at instant, sudden weight loss over a short duration, most Yoga practices will not do it for you.

Yoga is a daily discipline which works at the cellular level and begins to show results once you show up on your mat every single day. The right practices accompanied with correct breathing works on various systems on our body like the cardiovascular, endocrine, respiratory etc. alongwith the metabolic system which is responsible for regulating our weight.

Certain types of vigorous flowy styles of Yoga practices like Vinayasa, Mysore Ashtanga, Power Yoga are more energetic in nature working on the cardiovascular system. You will burn calories, tone and stretch your muscles, and provide weight bearing exercise for your bones with these forms of yoga thus aiding weight loss.

Most Yoga practices burn lesser calories than other forms of exercises but they increase mindfulness and the way one looks at their body so the practitioners become more aware of themselves and their food choices in general.

So Yogic practices encourage an inward focus increasing your body awareness which causes a shift in the way one thinks and treats their body like eating when hungry, stop eating when full etc. This awareness works at a subtle level and is attained over time and  a far more permanent way of keeping the body at its ideal weight instead of loosing weight through intense workouts and dieting, which is short lived.

Last but not the least Yoga is a lifestyle which works on us from inside out keeping both the body and mind lighter so its benefits go far beyond just weightloss! Try it and see the magic!

Namaste!
