How often do you usually think of the next summer when it comes to the way you consume electricity and water? Do you prepare yourself in advance or will you implement the same actions again when it’s summer time? Remember a small change in an action can create the big difference.

If you’re looking for ways to reduce how much water or electricity your household uses, you might be surprised at the difference just a few small changes can make.

When it comes to electricity, heating water can account for 4 to 7 percent of the energy consumed in your home. Turn down the temperature of your water heater to the warm setting (50 C) and save energy.

When you’re buying a new appliance like an air conditioner, fridge, washing machine or dishwasher, check the energy star rating. This will help you find the most efficient products and save you money in the long run. You can save a lot of electricity by buying energy efficient light bulbs and appliances!

Turn off your television, video, WiFi, PlayStation, and other entertainment devices when they are not being used.

As for saving water, water your lawn only when it needs it. If you step on the grass and it springs back up when you move, it doesn’t need water. If it stays flat, it does need water.

Use a bowl of water to clean fruits & vegetables rather than running water over them. You can also water your plants using the same water.

Invest in water-efficient goods when you need to replace household products. You can now buy water-efficient showerheads, taps, toilets, washing machines, dishwashers and many other water-saving products.

Always use full loads in your washing machine – this cuts out unnecessary washes in between.

Finally, use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways and sidewalks.

You don’t need to wait till summer to do create the change, remember the sooner the better always!

Act today and let the present define a better future, the more you delay and ignore, the more difficult it will be to implement the new action.
