Eight Don’ts of Parking

1. Don’t park on the footpath. The 4WD owners especially have this tendency to ride onto the footpath and happily leave the vehicle there. They should think of the inconvenience cause to pedestrians by their cavalier action. The pedestrians are the ones who have the right to use the space occupied by the 4WD.

2. Don’t park in the lay-by for buses or bus stops. One often sees cars or pick-ups parked in bus lay-bys. Wrong practice. This compels the bus driver to park on the main road which disrupts / slows/ blocks the flow of traffic, puts those getting down from the bus or wanting to get into it at inconvenience as well as endangering their safety since they have to then also contend with the road traffic.

3. Don’t park behind a properly-parked vehicle thereby blocking its exit. This is bad manners and laziness. Some people leave their number on the dashboard which is hardly acceptable. No reason that the driver of the well-parked vehicle should be phoning you and wasting time until you arrive.

4. Don’t occupy two parking slots as you park. Many drivers, instead of parking properly within the space allotted for one vehicle tend to park in such a way that their vehicle occupies half of each of the neighbouring slots with the result that no one can park in the vacant slot.

6. Don’t park against the flow of traffic. Parking spaces along the shop fronts are meant for vehicles driving on the same side. But there are drivers who would ‘cross the road’ so to say and park with their vehicle facing against the flow of traffic. This is not allowed. When taking out the vehicle it creates dangerous situations for the on-coming traffic.

7. Don’t park in the middle of the road – and certainly not with the engine running – to quickly buy that cigarette pack or the soft drink from the cold store. This amounts to apathy for the traffic behind you which will be disrupted and will slow down.

8. Never ever park in the slots marked for the handicapped if you are fit. These slots are allotted close to the service points or entrances to institutions so as to allow a level of ease and comfort for those arriving there in case they are suffering from physical disabilities.
