Bahrain will work jointly with the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and the African Federation of Weightlifting (AFW) to develop the sport in the kingdom, it has emerged.

A meeting between the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS) first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority (GSA) chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) president His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa and AFW chairman and IWF executive board member Khaled Muhalhal at Al Wadi Palace discussed prospects of cooperation to develop weightlifting in the country.

The meeting was attended by GSA chief executive Dr Abdulrahman Sadiq Askar, BOC secretary-general Fares Al Kooheji, and Bahrain Weightlifting Federation chairman Ishaq Ibrahim.

It was announced last month that Manama will host the 2024 edition of the IWF World Championships. This will be the most important weightlifting event ever staged in Bahrain, which successfully hosted the 2022 Asian Championships.
